A Week of Prayer and Supplication
Christian Recorder: August 16, 1883

Pastors of the above-named district, you are hereby directed to observe as a week of prayer and supplication to the God of all mercies, from Monday, September 24th, in the following order:

Announce the week of prayer as soon as this notice reaches you, and demand the presence of all your members and invite the members of all sister churches to worship with you.

See that your places of worship are open each evening by 8 o’ clock. Read an appropriate chapter from the Holy Scriptures, making such running comment as the Holy Spirit may suggest, and proceed with such singing and prayer service as the occasion may require.

While the evening services will be public for male and female, the sisters will hold a prayer meeting for at least one hour each afternoon, from 3 to 4, or 4 to 5 o’clock, for the especial benefit of the old and decrepit who may not be able to get out at night.

You are requested to pray and beseech the God of all grace, through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,

1st. For a general revival of the Christian religion.

2nd. For a cultured ministry attended by the holy spirit.

3rd. For a more practical and useful church membership in all good works.

4th. For a more vital, zealous and aggressive piety among the ministry and laity.

5th. For the spirit of missions and liberal contributions for the enlightenment of the nine hundred and fifty million heathens.

6th. For an increase of our Sabbath school interest.

7th. For the revival of family worship in our homes and around our fires.

8th. For the conviction, conversion, and justification of sinners.

9th. For education and the dissemination of practical knowledge.

10th. For God to raise up more men in our church who will write books, and give us a moral and scientific literature for our young people.

11th. For the overthrow of injustice caste prejudice and race hate, and for the establishment of righteousness and equity throughout the land.

The above are a few of the many things we would do well to carry to a throne of grace and submit to the Sovereign of the universe upon our knees.

Friday the 21st of September will be observed as a day of fasting, but those who cannot fast will please abstain.

I also forbid all ministers and members attending any lodge, society or secular conclave during the hours of these meetings, nor are the presiding elders exempt from attendance if they are in reach of any of these services. Should any pastor fail, unless in case of sickness, to observe this order, and even be present himself at these services, the presiding elders will report the same to me for such instructions as may be given.

May the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
